Cut and Carat: Key Factors When Choosing an Engagement Ring!

Wedding bells are ringing, and people are rushing to stores for the biggest diamond sales. But here’s a tip: don’t rush just because there’s a sale. There’s a hidden truth stores might not tell you. 🤯

Typically, when a diamond’s price is slashed by more than half, it could mean the diamond is less than 0.3 carats but boasts excellent clarity like VS1 or VS2, indicating very slight inclusions. For Singaporeans, the most sought-after carats are 0.7 and 1. Prices range from $5000 for 0.7 carats to $10,000 for 1 carat.

Now, let’s delve into how to select the perfect engagement ring for your significant other. First up is the cut. Diamonds come in various shapes and sizes, but it’s the cut that truly makes or breaks it. Do you know your partner well enough to gauge their preferred cut? Consider their style; which cut would best reflect their taste?

There’s an array of stones out there, but let’s focus on the five primary cuts. The round cut—a timeless classic, exudes simplicity, timelessness, and elegance. The princess cut, with its square design, is bold, daring, and definitely a statement piece. The marquise cut caters to those who seek uniqueness, echoing sophisticated elegance. The pear cut, resembling a teardrop, represents grace and beauty. Lastly, the heart-shaped cut, perfect for romantics and those who envision their fairy tale engagement.

Moving on to the GIA color grading scale, ranging from D (colorless) to Z (very yellow). Diamonds that are colorless fall within the D to F range, yet even a G, categorized as near colorless, can elicit a “wow, it’s stunning” from your partner.

Next on our agenda is clarity. You want that diamond to ‘shine bright like a diamond,’ right? Aim for a diamond with a clarity of at least VS1 or VS2. While an FL - IF diamond (internally flawless) would be the dream for the crazy rich Asians among us—no blemishes under 10x magnification—it comes with a hefty price tag, ranging from $7000 to 22k.

Opting for a more affordable option, such as eye-clean stones like VS2 or S1 graded diamonds, is a smart move. Lower-grade clean diamonds can look identical to flawless ones but cost thousands less.

Lastly, let’s talk carat—the weight of the diamond. GIA starts recognizing carats from a minimum of 0.5 and above. Keep an eye out for those ‘magic’ sizes: 0.5 (½ carat), ¾ carat (around 0.7 or 0.75 carats), and the iconic one-carat diamond. Surprisingly, there’s a price difference between a one-carat and a 0.99-carat diamond, despite their 0.01 difference in weight.

There you have it—a quick crash course on the 4Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat. Remember, the two that stand out the most are cut and carat. Why? Because your fiancée wants to wake up, look at her ring, and think, “Wow, I’m so lucky he got me such a substantial stone!”

The cut matters too—whether she loves a timeless classic like the round cut or dreams of a fairytale princess and prefers the heart-shaped one!
